The Satellite Amateur Radio Club (SARC) was formed at Vandenberg AFB to support the launch of the first Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio (OSCAR) on 12 DEC 1961. The rocket, a Thor-Agena nicknamed "Silver Streak" had as a primary payload the military Discover 36. OSCAR-1 was used as ballast on the rocket. The orbit was an ellipsoid ranging from 152 to 295 miles above the earth's surface. It measured only 9x13 inches and was assembled with equipment donated from around the country. It emitted a 140 mW signal on 144.983 MHz consisting of the Morse code characters "HI", with speed varying in relation to internal temperature. The entire active life of OSCAR-1 was 22 days because of battery limitations. It burned up from reentry after slipping into the atmosphere on 31 JAN 1962, 50 days after launch.
